Introducing Ikuko Ando 安藤郁子 Born in 1970 in Hirosaki in Aomori prefecture, Ikuko Ando is among the rising generation of Japanese women artists who choose clay as their primary artistic medium. For Ando, clay is more than a medium, it is her voice for personal expression, recording her thoughts and feelings like a diary. She sees clay as a living entity which retains memories of all that has happened through eons of its formation, a memory far longer than her own. If she opens her ears and listens to what clay has to teach, it will show her the beautiful forms and landscapes as if they were still alive. Her innovative work was awarded the Grand Prize for Asahi Modern Craft Exhibition in 1995. She currently serves on the faculty of Akita University of Art.
