Santa Fe-Japan Art & Culture Exchange
Program (JACEP) was established to promote and support artistic and
cultural interactions between Japan and Santa Fe, New Mexico. A
major function of the program is to work with educational institutions
to organize exhibitions, lectures, and workshops to promote dialogues
between artists in Japan and the Santa Fe area. The program
provides supports for outstanding artists to travel from Japan or the US
to attend events that enhance their specific fields.

JACEP sponsors two Japanese
and two American artists
to attend cultural events in Santa Fe in 2004.
The first invitees are Japanese painter Hiroki Murata
and American painter Susan Christie. Mr. Murata and Ms. Christie
opens
their two-person show "Tranquil Light II" at the Touching Stone
Gallery. On May 8, Susan Christie presents a lecture entitled
"Oriental Aesthetics for Contemporary Painting" in the
auditorium of the Santa Fe Woman's Club, 1616 Old Pecos Trail. On May 10, Mr. Murata and Ms. Christie
jointly offer a painting workshop at the Santa Fe Art Institute on the
campus of College of Santa Fe. This 1-day workshop, entitled "Novel Applications of Sumi-e for
Contemporary Painting", provides an excellent opportunity for
talented artists from different parts of the world to share experience
and ideas. Click here to see images
from the show and workshop.
During the third week of July, 2004, JACEP will
sponsor Japanese ceramist Hiroyuki Wakimoto to travel to Santa Fe, to
participate in the First Annual International Folk Art Market.
This Market is sponsored by the New Mexico Museum of International Folk
Art and the Museum of New Mexico Foundation (Web:
www.folkartmarket.org). Mr. Wakimoto, a master in Bizen style
wood-fired ceramics, will also open his one-person show at the Touching
Stone Gallery. During his stay, Mr. Wakimoto will have
opportunities to visit local kilns and share his expertise with
ceramists in the area. Click here to see images
from the show and events.
In August, JACEP will sponsor a lecture by American
artist Linelle Dickinson, in conjunction with her new show entitled
"Tracing the Lifeline" at Touching Stone Gallery.
Dickinson has adopted the ancient Japanese art of shifu (woven
cloth of paper) as her medium for artistic expression. Click here to see
Linelle Dickinson's show.
